What happens when user experience is dependent on a complex business process?

Beyond Numbers was created to help businesses solve this specific problem. In these cases, user experience must make a deep dive into the subject matter in order to achieve business objectives.

I begin by listening.

Organizations contain diverse voices. We make sure those voices are heard and consolidated into a clear plan of action. We create a strong relationship based on trust and transparency.

I follow a user-centered design process.

That means that I begin with an explicit understanding of the user. What are the user’s tasks, activities and environments?  What are the user’s motivations? In short, how does this product add value to the user’s life? The final design will be a bridge that unites the goals of the organization with those of the end user.

My process is iterative.

I sketch out a user journey and create a series of prototypes that are used to validate the design. Users have a voice throughout and the design is continually refactored based on this feedback loop.

I measure success.

Every initiative has a clear quantifiable criterion for success. I always evaluate the real life results of the project and make suggestions for incremental improvement and next steps.

For the past 15 years I have focused on designing digital experiences that add value to people’s lives.

I specialize in applications and websites that involve users navigating, analyzing and acting on, large data sets. The underlying data is complex, but the experience must be elegant and inspire confidence. I have developed solutions for financial services organizations such as TIAA-CREF and Citibank and consumer product companies such as Johnson and Johnson, Intel, and Pepsi. I have worked in-house on enterprise and b2b products for McKinsey and Co. and Mediaocean.

I taught design criticism at Parson School of Design for 4 years.

Teaching reinforced my design work by requiring me to explicitly articulate and communicate design ideas and insights.

I studied Philosophy and Fine Art and Design & Technology...

at UC San Diego, University of Essex, England, Jan van Eyck Academie, the Netherlands, and Parsons School of Design. This combination proved to be the perfect training ground to hone the analytic and design thinking skills that I use in my work.
